There are still a few places left where people burn their trash or yard debris. In order to contain the fire and sparks it's always a good idea to have a grate to cover the barrel. Because the heat of such a fire is the perfect temperature to create maximum rusting, both the barrel and the lid have a very short life span. To accommodate this eventuality, the hinge portion is made from heavy steel and the grate can be removed and replaced when it burns through.
